On the southern part of the Makarska Riviera, at the foothill of mount Biokovo, lies Zivogosce. It consists of three smaller, non-coherent places on the coast: Porat, Mala Duba and Blato, and old hamlets along the old road. It is situated 20 km south of Makarska, 80 km from Split and 120 km from Dubrovnik. The settlement Zivogosce is mentioned for the first time in the 13th century. The place was inhabited in prehistoric times, which is documented by finds on a site Suzina. The Franciscan monastery in Zivogosce, founded in 1616 , was this area's center of spiritual life and literacy, with a rich library and valuable art work. The Franciscan monastery was built near a once famous spring in the area. In the monastery you can admire the Baroque altar and the library with its abundance of books and archives.
