Jelsa - Island Hvar

Key Info

Just as with the rest of the island of Hvar, the beautiful Jelsa has a richly indented coastline with many small islands, coves and capes that are suitable for sunbathing and swimming. The beauty of Jelsa lies in the coastal paths, pine woods, windy paths and trails, the pretty villages scattered on the hill tops, the valleys filled with Mediterranean shrubs and healing plants and in the well preserved rural architecture of the narrow streets and squares.

The 15th century church of Sv. Juraj (St. George) on the Renaissance Baroque square is the oldest part of the village, where all the social life takes place.

Not far from Jelsa there is an interesting site – Grapčeva cave, the cult centre of the Neolithic island dwellers (5000 – 4000 BC), made up of a large and a small hall surrounded by corridors and smaller rooms.
